On August 20, at the Made by Google event, Google announced the Pixel 10 series along with the Pixel Watch 4. Pixel 10 saw significant upgrades over the 9 series, and so did the smartwatch.
What caught my eye in particular was their Google Pixel Watch 4. I love the domed look with thinner bezels, better battery life, and more. This is exactly what I will be talking about in detail in this content piece.
If you have been rocking a Pixel Watch 3 or older in the past, it is time you look at the Watch 4 because it is going to be worth the money (at least from the first impression).
If that sounds great, without much ado, let us dive right into it.
Battery Life is Great (Finally)
If you are using a smartphone with all the features turned on, how long do you expect it to last?
If you have previously used a smartwatch, your answer would probably be ‘a day’, and at the end of the day, you will be charging it again, right?
Well, that is not the case with the Pixel Watch 4. The smaller 41mm variant of the Pixel Watch 4 offers 30+ hours of active time, and it even gets to 40+ hours with the 45mm variant of the Pixel Watch 4. Isn’t that great? In simple words, you won’t need to charge your watch until the next day.
And that too isn’t a major problem. Whenever you head to the shower, just put it on charge, and as soon as you are back, you will be good to go for more than a day.
The factors making this possible are the bigger battery power than last year’s Pixel Watch 3 and a few other software optimizations to make the overall watch more efficient. And I like that.
AI Features are Super-Helpful
Google has become all about AI, and this iteration of the Pixel Watch is an obvious example of exactly that. Watch 4 comes loaded with tons of AI-powered features, and the one I have found to be the most useful is their Gemini-based voice assistant.
Previously, Google used the old assistant on their watches, but that wasn’t very helpful.
But now, it gets integrated with the rest of your phone, contact list, Google Maps, Calendar, and more.
The other day I was riding my bike, and it was the last day to pay my internet bill. I asked the Gemini assistant to quickly call Spectrum customer service (basically, my internet provider, which offers reliable internet service). It looked up my contact list and dialed the number without me needing to stop my bike, pull out my phone, and dial the number.
Apart from that, it comes with more such AI-powered features that are tailored towards health. For example, it literally becomes a health coach that sits on your wrist. Whenever you wake up, it presents you with insights, not just data for how long you slept and what quality of sleep you were able to achieve.
Then, on top of that, if you are going for a run, it calculates how much you stress your cardiovascular muscles out. You can use that data to slow yourself down, especially if you are a heart patient, or bump up your speed if you can do better.
There are more features like that sprinkled around the whole interface of the watch, but they are just gimmicky and not very helpful for me. So, let’s talk about the design.
Bezels Look More Curved and Thinner
If you have been into mechanical watches, you’d know how adored the domed shape bezel is in the watch community. It just looks super clean and good. Well, Google has taken it to the next level.
The Pixel Watch 4 is more curved than ever, and it is great.
It doesn’t just improve the looks of the watch, but it also enhances the viewing angles of the watch. The view doesn’t get blocked out if you look at it from an angle.
Apart from that, every year, Google makes the bezels thinner. By making them thinner, they make the display bigger. The original Watch and the Watch 2 were 1.2-inch AMOLED, then the Watch 3 was 1.4-inch, and here we have the Watch 4 with an even bigger and brighter display.
It is one of the best-looking displays of any watch I have seen. You might have had problems viewing outdoors with your Watch 3, or it might have been too small, but not anymore. Watch 4’s display can go as bright up to 3000 nits, which makes it perfect for outdoor usage as well.
The bottom line is pretty simple: it is one of the best smartwatches that you can buy to use with your Android phone. If you have a Pixel phone, then why not get a Pixel Watch?
